Dance To Your Daddy...

Dance Art Pictures, Images and Photos

When the Boat comes in...

Come here, ma' little Jacky,
Noo a've smoked mi baccy,
Let's hev a bit o' cracky,
Till the boat comes in.

Chorus:
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a fishy when the boat comes in.

Here's thy mother humming,
Like a canny woman;
Yonder comes thy father,
Drunk - he canna' stand.

Chorus:
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a haddock when the boat comes in.

Our Tommy's always fuddling,
He's so fond of ale,
But he's kind to me,
I hope he'll never fail.

Chorus:
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a bloater when the boat comes in.

Little fishy Pictures, Images and Photos

I like a drop mysel',
When I can get it sly,
And thou, my bonny bairn,
Will lik't as well as I.

Chorus:
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a mackerel when the boat comes in.

May we get a drop,
Oft as we stand in need;
And weel may the keel row
That brings the bairns their bread.

Chorus:
Dance ti' thy daddy, sing ti' thy mammy,
Dance ti' thy daddy, ti' thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a salmon when the boat comes in.

We have sung this song to our children for generations, in the north... Where the fishing industry, and later mining, sustained and fed our large and growing families, when there was naught else...

We bounced our bairns on our knees, wondering when the fishing boats would ever come in to harbour with their catches, carrying our loved ones safely back into our longing arms...

...We timed meals by the pit's starting and closing horns -- Just long enough to put a whistling kettle on the stove, and get the singing hinnies out of the oven, clapping the bairns' hands in time to the gentle musical rhyme...

'Dance to your daddy, sing to your mammy, dance to your daddy, to your mammy sing...'

Love that old song, reminds me of another one, from Lierpool I thing, Cilla Black recorded it, always make me choke up...'Oh you are a mucky kid
Dirty as a dustbin lid.
When I tell him what you did
You'll get a belt from your Da.

Back from my vacay! I was thinking the model in the first pic was awfully skinny then I realized her backside was in shadow- phew. And are those belly dancers??

Hope you are doing well!

hello! sorry haven't been here for ages...

this post took me right back - reminded me of that TV series where this was the theme tune but can i remember what it was called? senior moment of blank mindedness here.

and i never really quite believed geordie accents were quite like that till I moved to Durham for a while to study. its a fabulous accent.

Sorry Sink, thanks for standing by and taking the time to post, my dahlink... x

Moannie, my aunt, who had a pretty tough upbringing after her mum died and she gained a Wicked Stepmother, loved that song by Cilla - I can remember her playing it to me when I was a lot younger... Love to you x

Carma, you're always on vacay! ;) Thanks for dropping by - Hope you got some juggling and belly dancing in on your hollingberries - And those are indeed belly dancers - I loved the image... As I liked the fish-like dancer in the first pic... x

Lettuce, bless you for stopping by - When The Boat Comes In was the TV show that Alex Glasgow sang this song on...

I know what you mean about the accents - It's very easy to do a poor Geordie accent, not so easy to do a good one! I thought the acting in the show was tremendous, and I never knew you were in Durham... Wot larks! x
