While I wish them well with their lives and hope that they find happiness together, I just can't get excited about it, to be honest! Not one jot.
The lives that the royals live are so far removed from our own. I do respect Princess Anne, who has at least attempted to keep her own children's lives out of the scope of media attention, and who still works very hard in a life of public service, but who 'pays her own way'...
I harbour no grudges towards Prince William and his so-called 'Commoner' Bride, Catherine. Although her upwardly mobile family may make for some close-to-the-knuckle press headlines in the future, to be fair.
I shan't be pinning up Union Jack bunting to my walls, nor toasting their health with a glass of bubbly. No-siree.
For me, much of the light on the royal stage went out when, like a doe-caught-in-the-headlights, Princess Diana was hounded to her death in a road tunnel in the centre of Paris, either by the paparazzi or by whichever conspiracy theory you choose to ascribe to. Not fair. Not fun.
In the modern world, the mediaeval notion of Kate having to produce 'an heir and a spare' to prove her mettle seems positively barbaric.
I might take a sneak peek at the telly, though but... Just to see the dress. Well, no-one can resist a wedding, can they? Least of all curmudgeonly Fhina!

We have had a few royal weddings . I remembered back as far as just after the current queen . I'm not much on any wedding...but the dress is the deal ...the pomp and ceremony not to be matched in my small world . So , I will try to crawl from my bed at 3:00 am to bear witness and fantasize a little...then back to reality of my life.
They're going bonkers over here, and I'm going on telly on Wed night to talk about it on a local BBC type show. I have had to do some homework though as I wasn't really following it before now.
My wife is all geared up to do a Crown Roast - it will be in the evening Australian time.
I'm afraid I must agree with you. It has all the overtones of Hello magazine, if you ask me.
Agree with you (and Chairman Bill)..the whole hoopla is boring me to tears at the moment.
I'm as republican as they come and if you get me started, I will get up on my soapbox and label them all parasitical, worthless (apart from attracting all the tourist bucks), overly entitled wastes of skin, and they should all suffer the fate of the Romanovs. So I'm going to have to be very quiet about the fact that I intend to watch the wedding all day on the telly - just for, um, research purposes, y'know, and nothing at all to do with the dress, the shiny fabulousness of the soldiers on horseback, the stunning interior of Westminster Abbey, the undoubtedly marvellous hats or the happiness of the crowds. No, nothing to do with any of that.

I'm with you on this. I think it's pathetic the way people stop their lives, take holidays etc just so they can watch this wedding. I'll no doubt click on CNN to have an update on the day but otherwise I'm not interested.
Sorry about not informing you I'd closed my old blog and started a new one with WordPress. I haven't been a very attentive blogger of late. Well, I'm just too excited about the wedding to read blogs. Not.
You saw the Great One! I'm jealous. I hope one day to see Rodgers perform live again. He was brilliant fronting Queen in Paris about five years ago. Great voice, great man.

Just saw your comment re silver wedding anniversary. It's weird in a way. I remember when my parents celebrated 25 years of marriage and I thought "gawd, they're old." Yes, well. I shan't mention tempus fugit and how time seems to have speeded up because I guess you know that.
Anyway, big congrats to you (and me). My 25 years have been a blast - here's to the next 25!
Yeah, it's over the top...... but across the pond, the daughter and I are waking up at 3 a.m. to watch the festivities because we want to see the events as they unfold, not re-runs hours later. My daughter asked last weekend what food would we have during it!!!! I hope you are doing well, must read over previous posts to catch up with you!
OK. There are moments, when one of the younger one's do something totally daft, or Fergie sucks a toe or Andrew takes another jet to someone's yacht at our expense or Phillip speaks, when I think get rid of the lot. But then I look around at so called Republics and think...do we want that here? And I answer myself, No! Emphatically No! The family gives us something special. Yes I would prefer it if they were slightly more Democratic like the Danes, but where is the glamour of your royals being 'just like us?'
After Diana, I loathed them all, but I believe, I hope they have learned a lesson in humility.
In these particular times of hardship [for many of us] of scrimping and saving, making do and tightening our belts, we are going to have a joyful day of glamour and majesty that only we know how to to. What goes on tomorrow will be watched by 5 Billion people. Imagine that? What other ceremony any where else in the world would merit that.
I was a child with Elizabeth and Margaret, saw the Coronation of the Queen, the birth of her children and watched them growing up and having children of their own, tomorrow will be a wonderful day when we can once again feel united.
I can't wait.

I can see the weight in both sides of this coin...I'm still going to drag myself up at 4 a.m. and watch all of the festivities...just to have a nice shot of optimism. ;^)

I loved your post! I'm a struggling college student in America, and I don't know why people keep asking me if I'm going to watch. Our country was just ravaged by tornadoes, I would like some news coverage on that. Ironically, I work night shifts, and I haven't been called in yet. It's on tv and I want to go to bed...but like you I'm really just waiting to see the dress :)

And we were beginning to think that there was no-one else out there who, like ourselves, considers the whole thing to be a pantomime verging on farce, or vice versa.
Not having seen anything of today's episode of the on-going 'soap', we are not in a position to pass judgment save that of saying that here, in Budapest, the red flag is flying high!
