Dolly Parton
A zillion times better and more talented than Whitney... Sorry... Here is the original, Dolly, no not the cloned sheep, Dolly Parton, from the hills and vales of rural America... From her coat of many colours, to Billy Jo's blanket on the ground, Dolly is our touchstone, our mentor...
Here is her live rendition of Jolene a few years ago, and above, Whitney's famous/now infamous 'I will always love you...'
Jolene has always moved moi... What about toi?!
I remember I used to watch a great bitter-sweet sitcom when I was growing up. It was called Butterflies and Dolly penned and sang the gorgeous theme tune, although not for the series itself.
Ma soeur, Wiki, whispered in my shell-like:
"The title of Butterflies superficially comes from Ben's lepidoptery hobby,as well as a metaphor for Ria's struggle against what feels to her as captivity. In the first episode Ria tells Leonard "we are all kids chasing butterflies, you see it, you want it, you grab it, and there it is — all squashed in your hand", though she adds "I am one of the few lucky ones, I have a pleasant house, a pleasant man and two pleasant sons...my butterfly didn't get squashed"."
I wanted to go out with one or both of the sons of the middle-aged, menopausal, housewife heroine, Ria, and share their laid back style of life...
I was young, somewhere around the teenage years, and believed then that the world might be at my feet.
There was promise in my life, and no regret. I thought I might end up in any manner of jobs. I never wanted to have a dull job in an office.
I was learning languages and loved art and was keen to either go into the RAF to teach English to Forces children in Germany, or become a Graphic Designer in a marketing agency, probably in a city. I was never talented enough as an artist, to be honest.
I dressed from market stalls and hippy shops. Still do in some respects.
I hadn't fallen in love, like Dolly and Jolene had, with the same man...
Yet.

You'll never do a whole lot unless you're brave enough to try.
