Tea for Two...

It's Sunday afternoon at the Pavilion dance-hall but everyone calls it 'the Piv', and it's time for a right old-fashioned but really new swinging tea-dance number . I'm standing by the side of the floor where all the wooden chairs are ranged around, looking shyly for someone on the other side of the room to pluck up courage to come and ask me to dance...

I won't say no. I'm not like that. I'm not so fussy like a lot of other girls.

I'm wearing a dress my Cousin Nancy let me borrow for this evening and it's made of blue sateen with a sweetheart neckline and nipped in waist. The full skirt swings when I walk carefully in it...

It's pretty, not like me at all. I feel just like I'm in the Hollywood films you get to see at the Regal.

I'll have to rinse it through and press it tomorrow as she wants it for Tuesday night when the servicemen are going to be passing through on manoeuvres. I like the blue uniforms best of all.

I got a little damp in the downpour on the way here tonight after the tram-bus dropped me off. Damned if I do, damned if I don't...

My hair has gone a little frizzy after I had straightened it nicely with the flat-iron across the board in front of the fire before I left the house. At least I managed not to singe my forehead this time.

Still, I hope I haven't left any hairs on the iron again. That'll mean I catch it later when Mam tries to iron Dad's starched collars for the week...

My wet black suede Winkle Pickers which have blue periwinkles embroidered at the toes are just starting to pinch where I should have stuffed some balled-up newspaper in just like Dad said.

I'll have to walk home again tonight because I don't have enough money for the fare back after paying to get in, and this Sarsaparilla I had to buy doesn't taste the same as it did last week when Tommy himself brought me one, as black as velvet and as sweet as a sugar sandwich, with bubbles winking on the brim of a steaming cold glass. I wasn't half gasping then!

But it'll all be worth it, if I get just one dance, I swear.

I hope I get one that'll walk me home 'n'all.

I hope you get that dance as well. Such a simple requests..really. Just a dance. Even though the shoes are pinching already!
I can see that full skirt swinging as she moves. Fabulous!

It seems as though I am not the only one who wants to know "the answer" - did you get that walk home? It sounded like a lovely evening!

If you truly like Tommy Dorsey, I have no doubt you'll get at least one dance. Heck, if I could dance a lick, I'd dance with you if it was Dorsey.

Something I wrote earlier...
