Staying with acting, when we're all busy, busy, busy at weekends, so it's easier to offer shorter bite-size, postings, this concerns Marilyn, and the words that tell us more about her life...

It's all make believe, isn't it?

A career is born in public -- talent in privacy.

A career is wonderful thing, but you can't snuggle up to it on a cold night.

I have been haunted by the ghost of Marilyn. Ever since I learned that my father-in-law had a family which he had kept a secret for many years from the family I had married into... And even when confronted by the facts, he still denied it completely.

And then I found out that his daughter is called Marilyn...

How can anyone do that? ...To bury a life so completely over time, having whispered secrets shared only with a few...

I am haunted by Marilyn's tragedy in many more ways than one...

A fascinating insight. Not a lot of Arthur Miller playscripts, I notice!

(I'm also on LT as headbang 8, and find that I share 14 books with MM.)

Great pictures but I'm having trouble understanding

*Husbands are chiefly good as lovers when they are betraying their wives...*

I love her music, especially his versions of Sweet Dreams and Tainted Love.

headbang8: Thank you for that - I shall be off there soon!

The Dotterel: I think certainly one of the pics I selected shows the deep sadness and alienation Marilyn undoubtedly felt. Thank you for stopping by, Sir...

FF: The reason I selected that quote was owing to the fact that my FIL betrayed my MIL to whom he was not married... She was ill, and he did that, much as he had betrayed his first wife with my then quite young MIL... I am not condoning what Marilyn said here, I merely wanted to reflect my history... x

Chairman Bill: Have you been vaping the waccy baccy, Sir??! You joker you!

A Woman Of No Importance said...

FF: Those are Marilyn's words, not mine, dahlink...

What a beautiful tribute to our sad icon who left us far too soon......The world can be such a harsh place, no?

I sort of see but it was the word *chiefly* that foxed me I think.
As for your inlaws - what a terrible shock it must have been for all when the news broke

A Woman Of No Importance said...

Midlifer: I think so too - Beautiful and wonderful, and also sad sometimes, Reggir girl, darling...

FF: I see, I am sorry, FF... It was a shock, coming from a family friend concerned about probate issues - He thought we knew, and we did not... FIL has ever denied it, but we got the truth from a much beloved, now passed, aunt, who had kept in touch with both children of the first marriage over the years until their mother died, until sadly they no longer wished to have contact with her... I cannot forgive him this, FF, never... It was like one of those old sentimental films - When OH's grandma died a few years later we found photos of her first grandchildren - Ballet dancing, playing with trains, that kind of memory - hidden in the linings of her albums - A wedding photo cut in half, losing the bride's image - that kind of thing - I still find it tragic... x

Things are never as linear as they seem. Yet, secrets can never be healthy things, can they?

And to think, she was seen as a full model. Tiny little thing.

i love this woman; i asked the plastic surgeon if he could make me look like her and the rascal said yes. I think he was lying. But i still love him.

Fhina honey I sent you an email which comes back and it says it can't send it to you. I was just writing how much your love and affection have meant to me and Jahnu, and how it has touched our hearts and healed us in very real ways...my love to you, big time xoxox

It's sad that such a beautiful woman seemed to have such a tortured soul. But we have to live with our choices, don't we? We reap what we sow. Still sad, though :(.

Happy Saturday to you, Fhina, love. Hope it's wonderful! xo

She's on my list of people who I would like to invite to dinner (but perhaps not the rabbit stew!)

Hi Fhina,

Having built us all up ready for your return to work, you then start having a lie-in??!!Hope it was fun.

Don't empathise with MM too much. She had much more than most and I agree with Diane. We make our own choices.

That first quote is me totally. Totally! She was fascinating, incredibly talented, and heartbreakingly sad. I love Marilyn.

I think Marilyn was fascinating and so sad, too. I love the quotes, particularly the one about 'If you can't handle me at my worst, you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.' No truer words....

Love to you, Fhina! Have a wonderful weekend!

So beautiful, so sad.

I've never met my father in law. Left wife and 10 kids, providing nothing after he'd gone. Mother in law had to work nights as psychiatric nurse to provide for them all. Hubby rang him recently to tell him his daughter had died. "Dad it' Damian" "Damian who?" Don't think we're missing much there, sadly xxx

I just think it's so interesting that, almost 50 years after her death, we are still so fascinated by Marilyn. Yes, she did die young and she was a celebrity, but even so, it's just never stopped, has it?
So, on behalf of Porsche Guy and his own obsession with her, thank you for this post!

I've always been attracted to the melancholy, plaintive side of Marilyn. I once saw a documentary on her, and Billy Wilder (who directed her in Some Like it Hot) painted the picture of an insecure, broken woman. I don't know much about her life, except the destructive Miller marriage and the romance of Joe DiMAggio bringing flowers to her grave 'til the end. This post is a great tribute to the real Norma Jean, grazie Fhina.

A friend once said "You will never be able to understand [her family problems] because you had the parents from heaven whilst so many of us have a parent or parents from hell." I find understanding how you must feel very difficult. It makes me realise what a blessed life I've had.

Or perhaps I just don't know about the secret family.....

I don't understand how someone could live with themselves knowing they had deceived the ones they loved. . .

I know it takes all kinds. . . but I could never understand that kind!

Fhina, lovely tribute, fab pics too.

I'm subdued though...keep thinking about Doris, have you been over today? It's terrible. (poetic license)

She was quite lovely, wasn't she? The level of torture her mind endured is astounding!!

I sometimes struggle through my days wondering how some people can do the things they do and hold their head up high. I've been told I like to watch the world through Rose Coloured glasses. Well, if I took them off, there'd be a trail of wrath so I'll keep them on, thank you, and continue believing that most people are inherently good or else I'll go insane!

P.S. I have a 17 year old too...the challenges are way beyond what I was prepared for!!

I am sorry I never got to respond to all of you separately - I hope you can forgive me - We had a bit of a family crisis at the weekend that has now calmed fortunately, amid the birthday party of my three year old niece - Her dominant Egyptian father is separated from my sister-in-law and has a very much in evidence Estonian girlfriend - Hence the tensions - V. sorry... Love to all xox
